Around the Senators

Forward Chris Neil is targeting Saturday for his return to the lineup.

Neil underwent arthroscopic knee surgery just more than a week ago. The tough guy has only two goals and three points in 17 games this season, but does have 50 penalty minutes. He is listed as day-to-day.

While Neil is doubtful for tonight's game against the Atlanta Thrashers, however, Shean Donovan (shoulder) and Ryan Shannon (concussion) should be ready.

Dean McAmmond, who is battling a sore throat, has not even resumed skating and is out of tonight's game. Alex Picard will also miss tonight's game with a wrist injury.

Forwards:
Heatley - Spezza - Alfredsson
Vermette - Fisher - Donovan
Foligno - Kelly - Winchester
Ruutu - Bass - Shannon

Defence:

Phillips - Volchenkov
Schubert - Kuba
Smith - Bell

Goaltender:
Alex Auld

Injured players: Chris Neil, Alex Picard, Dean McAmmond

Laviolette fired; Hartsburg might be next

The Carolina Hurricanes have just announced that they have fired head coach Peter Laviolette, who led the team to the 2006 Stanley Cup championship. They have replaced him with former Hurricanes and Maple Leafs head coach Paul Maurice.

Sources say Maurice will remain on as head coach at least until the end of the season, at which point the position will be re-evaluated leaving the Hurricanes the freedom to head in a different direction, or sign Maurice to a long term contract.

The Hurricanes missed the playoffs the last two seasons and are 12-11-2 this season after Sunday's 4-1 loss to the Anaheim Ducks.

The team has called a press conference to announce the news...

The next NHL head coach that might be shown the door is Senators' head coach Craig Hartsburg, and that might be very soon as the Senators are struggling to avoid the league's basement. Tonight the Sens face the Atlanta Thrashers, the only team keeping them from being dead last in the Eastern Conference. A loss against the Thrashers, who lost 5-4 to the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday, could be the last nail in Hartsburg's coffin.

As I previously stated in a previous blog, Hartsburg is on a short leash since the beginning of November. Ottawa went 4-5-3 in 12 games, scoring only 23 goals (1.92 goals/game). A loss against the cellar-dwelling Thrashers might force GM Bryan Murray to make a coaching change to sparkplug his hapless team.

A look at Brian Burke's probable moves before the trade deadline

During Saturday's press conference to the Toronto media, Brian Burke all but confirmed that the Leafs are officially out of the Sundin sweepstakes. “I don’t think we fit his profile as a team,” said Burke. He referred to the 2-year $20 million offer from the Vancouver Canucks, putting the emphasis on the fact that Sundin's comeback is not about money, but about playing for a contender.

Therefore, if Burke is not looking to add Sundin to his team, this means he will likely try to unload some veterans.

Look for Burke to start moving players in January as he will study his team in the next few weeks to see which players fit his style of players: physical, gritty, tough, hardworker, reliable defensively, etc.

Goaltenders: Curtis Joseph is having a tough season, posting a 3.95 GAA and a woeful .861 save percentage. He hasn't won any game yet for the Leafs. The veteran goaltender might be asked to hang his skates to give some seasoning to Justin Pogge, the Leafs' goaltender of the future.

Defensemen: Tomas Kaberle could also be on the move, provided that he lifts his no-movement clause, by the trade deadline. Kaberle, a great puck-moving defenseman, would become a hot-commodity in the NHL, espcially around the trading deadline, as there won't be many offensive defensemen available this season, save for Jay Bouwmeester. Signed through 2010-2011, Kaberle is quite affordable at $4.25 million/season. Pavel Kubina could also be traded around the deadline, but his high salary $5 million/season makes him hard to trade.

Forward/defenseman Ian White was also on the trade market at the beginning of the season, but his versatility proved to be quite useful when the Leafs' defense got depleted by injuries (Van Ryn, Finger, Frogren).

Forwards: Alexei Ponikarovsky and Nikolai Antropov have never lived up to their expectations even though they are big forwards loaded with skills. They never took advantage of their large frame to get free in front of the opponents' net.

The 6'4'', 220 lb, Ponikarovsky has never reached 50 points over his 8-year career with the Leafs. His best season has been 45 points in 2006-07. This season he is on pace for 57 points, so it would be a good time to trade as his valuewill never be higher.

The 6'5'', 230 lb, Antropov had a career-year last season, notching 26 goals and 56 points in 72 games. Antropov, who is on pace for 64 points this season, is set to become an unrestricted free-agent at the end of the season. He could very well become a highly-sought after player at the trade deadline for a team that is looking for depth and size at centre.

Brian Burke would also really like to trade inconsistent Jason Blake, but his $4 million/year bloated contract makes him nearly impossible to move. With three years left to Blake's contract after this season, expect Brian Burke to buy him out unless he starts producing all-star caliber numbers on the ice. Blake has only 10 points in 19 games this season.

Another candidate to be traded earlier to this season would have been Matt Stajan, but his stellar play (20 points in 22 games) after being a healthy scratch given him some kind of breathing room. It's the first time Stajan is logging big minutes as the Leafs first-line centre and he has responded well. His affordable salary at $1.75 million per year also makes him an attractive player for Burke.

Who would you move? For draft picks, prospects or younger established players?

Around the Senators

The Ottawa Senators assigned yesterday defenceman Brian Lee and forwards Cody Bass and Zack Smith to their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Binghamton Senators.

All three players participated in Ottawa’s 4-2 loss to the New York Islanders on Saturday, Nov. 29. Lee played 17:21 and was a +1, Smith played in 7:01 and Bass played 4:10. The game marked the National Hockey League debut for Smith.

Bass was recalled earlier today by the Senators after he played in the Binghampton Senators' 5-3 victory Sunday over Hamilton Bulldogs at the Bell Centre in Montreal.

Alex Picard is day-to-day with a wrist injury and Dean McAmmond is still suffering from a bad cold. The Senators next play on Wednesday when they face the Atlanta Thrashers.

Maple Leafs expected lines tonight vs the Kings

Forwards:
Alexei Ponikarovsky - Matt Stajan - Nik Antropov
Nik Kulemin - Mikhail Grabovski - Niklas Hagman
Andre Deveaux - Dominic Moore - Lee Stempniak
Ryan Hollweg - Jamal Mayers - John Mitchell

Defence:
Tomas Kaberle - Pavel Kubina
Luke Schenn - Jeff Finger
Anton Stralman - Ian White

Goaltender:
Vesa Toskala

Injured players: Mike Van Ryn, Jonas Frogren

Jason Blake is cleared to play, but he will not play tonight as expected. He will likely dress later in this trip. Defenseman Jamie Sifers accompanied the team on the Westcoast trip as a precautionary measure. Matt Stakan will dress even tough he is battling the flu.

Around the Sabres

Patrick Kaleta will miss tonight's game against Nashville due to an injury he suffered on Saturday when he was checked by Andrei Kostitsyn. He is week-to-week.
Ales Kotalik will be back in the lineup as expected since his hamstring injury has healed, he will play on the 4th line.

Andrew Peters will be back in the lineup tonight, and Max Afinogenov will be once again a healthy scratch.

Sabres' expected lines for tonight:

Paul Gaustad - Jochen Hecht - Jason Pominville
Thomas Vanek - Derek Roy - Drew Stafford
Daniel Paille - Clarke MacCarthur - Mark Mancari
Ales Kotalik - Adam Mair - Andrew Peters

Defensemen:
Jaroslav Spacek - Craig Rivet
Tony Lydman - Andrej Sekera
Henrik Tallinder - Teppo Numminen

Goalies:
Ryan Miller

Update: Craig Rivet will miss tonight's game with an undisclosed injury. Nathan Paetsch will take his spot.

Around the Bruins

Aaron Ward suffered a leg injury in the first period of Saturday's game when he checked Derek Meech. Ward is day-to-day and he was not on the ice in practice this morning.
Good news as Marco Sturm was back on the ice after missing six games because of a concussion.

The Bruins' next game being only Thursday in Tampa Bay, Ward and Sturm should be back in uniform thanks to a few days off.

Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli may try to acquire a veteran defenseman is Ward or another play has to miss an extended period of time. Right now, there is no need to look outside the organization as rookie Matt Hunwick is playing like a seasonded veteran. In 12 games since being inserted in the lineup, Hunwick has 3 goals and 5 assists to go with a +10 differential. Hunwick is also playing on the second power play unit.
